What makes Shakeology formula different from other brands?
Unlike other shake brands that buy interrelated ingredient blends from third-party vendors, we carefully choose every single ingredient for Shakeology’s superfood blends to make sure you get the greatest possible health benefits from any scoop.
When brands rely on premade mixes, they have nothing to say to each ingredient, including its amount, strength or even where it comes from. This cheap approach does not work for shakeology.
We are interested in any ingredient all the way from farm to bag and know that you do too. We also know that you are investing in your health. Therefore, we have always prioritized quality rather than costs.
Has the shaking changed since it was launched in 2009?
Over the years, we have updated Shakeology formula to maintain an unmatched level of nutrition and quality.
When supply chains and growth conditions change, we refuse to compromise when an ingredient, supplier or process no longer meets our standards.

We will continue to update Shakeology’s formula when changes are the right thing to do for our customers because we know that the nutrition you put in your body is one of the most important daily decisions you can make. That’s why we’ve sold over a billion portions.
What goes into the decisions to update Shakeology formula?
Each month, Shakeology tools Isabelle Daikeler and Darin create the oil with our dedicated research and development teams (F&U) to evaluate the current shaking formula and identify potential improvements.
Some of the reasons they may consider updating the formula includes:
- Ingredient quality: We are constantly testing our suppliers’ ingredients for pollutants, fillers, lookalikes, mold, heavy metals and more. In fact, our test is so strict that suppliers have been known to sell their best crops to us. And if suppliers cannot give us the quality we require, we see elsewhere or remove it from Shakeology – even when our competitors don’t.
- Scientific evidence: New research results about specific nutrients or ingredients and their potential benefits can often create formula updates. Unlike most companies, Shakeology conducts clinical studies to better understand and improve our product’s health benefits.
- Consumer feedback: Shakeology takes customer satisfaction very seriously. Sometimes we can change the formula based on feedback about taste, texture, benefits or any number of factors.
What recent updates have been made to Shakeology Formula?
Shakeology Original: Our last formula change to original shakeology was made in 2019 for vegan flavors and 2020 for whey taste.
This update removed oat protein, chia and Sacha inchi, adding more probiotics, fiber, flax seeds and matcha to improve the nutritional value of shaking theology while addressing polluting concerns for certain ingredients.
- Heart & intestinal health: These formula changes increased Shakeology’s dietary fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics and green tea phytonutrients to help better support bowel and heart health.
- Gluten -free: We added a “gluten -free” claim with the update. This came from removing oatmeal from the vegan formula and improving our test so we could feel Shakeology “Gluten -free” with confidence. Although oats are naturally gluten -free, they can often be contaminated with gluten.
Shakeology 0g added sugar: By 2024 we launched Shakeology and added sugar that took countless hours to develop to make sure it has all the same benefits as original shaking, tastes just as good and uses high quality ingredients, just like the original. The most difficult part of getting 0g -added sugar formula on the right was to choose the right natural sweetener to be used instead of organic cane sugar to give the delicious taste that our customers expect from shaking.
We chose Stevia of the highest quality, rope M., it has the cleanest taste that is similar to the most sugar and is taken from farmers who have learned to grow and harvest Stevia responsibly. The rope M that we use is also non-GMO project verified.
Shakeology was considered “too expensive to produce”
When Shakeology launched in 2009, there was nothing else like that on the market, and despite dozens of copycats, it is still so today.
Although there were plenty of protein-shaking out there, Shakeology is the original superfood shake, carefully designed to deliver all-in-one, whole-food-based nutrition that people still do not get from the average diet.
When the Environmental Attorney and Supplement Formulator Darin Oil (the world’s first superfood hunter) began to create the highest quality and most potent shake he could imagine all of him told him it was too expensive to make.
For the oil, Shakeology was not just about buying the world’s healthiest superfoods. It was also about finding the best crop quality.
That’s when he was put in contact with co-formulator Isabelle Brousseau-Daikeler and Carl Daikeler, CEO of Bodi, who unaware of him worked against a similar goal.
“Carl said, ‘Don’t be afraid of costs. We will not compromise on this formula, ‘”remembers the oil. It’s a promise that shaking is still doing well today.
Why is there natural flavor in Shakeology? Isn’t Darin against them?
Shakeology-Co creator Darin The oil is very obvious about its discomfort for many natural flavors, and this is a point of view shared by everyone at Shakeology.
In the United States, natural flavors can contain additives and solvents that are considered natural and generally recognized as safe by the FDA.
Just because they are allowed by the FDA does not mean that we put them in shaking.
Shakeology uses only natural flavors derived from plants and extracted using traditional processes such as copper distillation, percolation or spinning cone (low temperature process for sensitive taste).
These methods simply concentrate the flavor components so that they can be used at low levels to improve the taste, similar to a chef that makes a reduction or coulis.
What natural flavors are used in shakeology?
Take, for example, Vanilla Shakeology.
After the launch of Chocolate Whey Shakeology in 2009, it took two years to create Vanilla Whey Shakeology because it took so long to find a vanilla supplier who met our strict standards.
Natural flavors may be the latest ingredient to go under the microscope, but the reality is, the quality of every single ingredient on a label depends on the brand’s sourcing and test standards.
Therefore, it is hard to know what you really get. Two products with the same ingredient list can have very different content. And that is what makes the difference between shakeology and everything else on the market.
